After much conflict during the Dark Years, loose confederations in North America establish settlements in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Oil from the thawed Arctic settlement at Holy Cross, and natural gas harnessed from northwestern coastal Banff, allowed populations in Midlands to utilize energy other than steam. After salvaged ships were made seaworthy, trade began with the southern coastal city of Port Austin, and the Appalachia Peninsula. In 2121, the factions came together and ratified a constitution.
During the Age of Diplomacy, the North American Union became the most powerful post-impact nation in the world, due in large part to their Navy, comprised of salvaged submarines and ships, found in and around the continent. Despite their best efforts to establish control over other helovx-nations, they met near-total defeat at the hands of Ramaxia in 2184.
Collusion with Australia
During the Dark Years, before they were a Union, the peoples on the western coast of North America, opened trade with the Australians. Aiding the Australians in a defensive against the Maori nationalists rebuilding Aotearoa, their reward became fresh volcanic rich soil from the former New Zealand. Traded with the factions in the former midwest region of the country, the imported earth set off off a modular farming boom that established population centers around Lakes Harbor, in the Midlands.
Discord with Jungwa
Sailing ships into the North Atlantic, the NAU found Uralskey Island. Unwilling to traverse its mighty wall for fear of radiation sickness, the Nauists made landfall in western Yazhou in 2132. After Nauists spies had witnessed the launch of the first floating city in Jungwa, they opened diplomatic relations. In November of 2135, they offered the Jungwa Collective the Bering Islands; balsamic islands made bigger by intense volcanic activity north of Alaska. Now stable and resting at sea level, these islands of fertile soil and extensive lithium deposits, would give Jungwa the freedom to fuel their cities without reliance on Ramaxia. In return, the NAU wanted access to the technology provided by Ramaxia. The Collective agreed, sharing the infrastructure and agricultural tech. The NAU had anticipated weapons and energy technology and were disappointed when they didn’t get it; taking the technology, they barred Jungwanian ships from making landfall on the Bering Islands.
Representation at Ramaxia Primada
After the failure to reclaim Brasilia in 2122, and losing their dredging fleet during the Greenland Base Incident in 2129, the NAU actively avoided interaction with Ramaxia. After women from Jungwa and Brasilia had been sent as trade representatives to live at the newly erected Antarctica City, Eurislam leaders convinced the Nauists and Australia, in 2155, to sail delegations to Port Antarctica. The all-female complement of women from Australia had been allowed to stay, but the Nauist men that came ashore after being told not to, had been physically assaulted.
The Nauists were invited back to Ramaxian territory by way of Holy Cross, after the Sixth-Gen administration opened Ramaxia Primada, in 2180. Respecting Ramaxia’s gender politics, Jungwa, Eurislam, Brasilia, and Australia, sent only women. The NAU erred again, sending a male diplomat to oversee four women that came to live at the station. John Dunigan and the eight Marines that brought him ashore were beaten and sexually assaulted by a group of young Ninth-Gen Marixi assigned to the Port Antarctica. Charges were never filed against Dokomod Fusa Kul, the Marix that led the assault. All but one of the Nauist women refused to stay. Diplomacy with Ramaxia finally occurred in 2183 when the daughter of the Holy Cross diplomat that had stayed, took up residence on Ramaxia Primada. The ambassador lived on the seafloor base for two years, fleeing after the Yulitat Coup.
Fall from Prominence
In 2184, the North American Union came to the aid of Australian refugees fleeing an attack by the Ramaxian Polar Fleet. Unable to combat the technologically advanced Ramaxian war machine, the NAU was left with one one warship. Jungwa sent an assault force to the Bearing Islands in 2186, and seized a carrier vessel stationed there. Maori tribes banded together to overran the NAU encampment on Aotearoa in 2190, liberating themselves after the genocide against the Australians. Holy Cross renogiated the terms of its civil alliance with the NAU, and representatives from that region returned to the South Pole in 2190, as a trade diplomats to Antarctica City.
The North American Union has since withdrawn from the world economy to focus on bettering its own quality of life. In 2225 they sent an official Ambassador to Ramaxia Primada, a woman from Holy Cross.
